Symptom

Swelling.

What it may mean, what to try at home, and when to see a specialist.

Leg swelling that worsens through the day and improves overnight is typically venous in origin. Sudden one-sided swelling, however, can signal a blood clot and needs urgent care.

What it may mean
  • Venous insufficiency
  • Lymphedema
  • DVT (sudden, painful, one-sided)
  • Heart, kidney, or liver causes
What to try at home
  • Elevation above heart level
  • Compression therapy
  • Reduce salt intake
  • Stay active
When to see a specialist

Sudden, painful, one-sided swelling — go to urgent care to rule out DVT. Persistent chronic swelling — see a vein specialist.
